KINGSTON, Ont – Hudson’s Bay Co. owes more than $1.4 million to Kingston-area businesses and service providers, according to court documents made public after the retailer filed for creditor protection under federal legislation.

The iconic retailer filed for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in March. Kingston-based creditors are listed as unsecured, meaning they are lower in priority than secured creditors when it comes to repayment.

Nationally, Hudson’s Bay Co. has more than $1 billion in total debt.

Locally, the largest debt is tied to Hudson’s Bay’s retail space at the Cataraqui Centre on Gardiners Road, with an outstanding amount of $1,397,107. Additional debts include $46,762 owed to Vagary International Inc., a Kingston-based company; $1,252 to Mr. Jackets, a local sportswear retailer; $1,986 to Utilities Kingston, the city’s utility provider; and $1,711 to 1517907 Ontario Limited, a business located at 259 Princess St.

As of May, Hudson’s Bay had not issued a public statement on the specific debts related to Kingston. The company is currently liquidating its operations, with plans to close all stores by June 15.

Among the potential buyers for Hudson’s Bay’s remaining assets are billionaire mall owner Weihong Liu, Canadian Tire and a Toronto investment firm.

Primaris, which manages the Cataraqui Centre, did not respond to a request for comment.
