Controversial waterfront high-rise to move forward after council approval

A controversial high-rise development on Kingston’s waterfront was given the go-ahead by council at their meeting on Tuesday night.

5 Lower Union Street, the site proposed by developer Homestead Land Holdings Ltd., is currently a vacant wharf next to the Great Lakes Museum. The 19-storey mixed-use building laid out in the proposal will provide 118 homes.

Despite concerns surrounding the contentious community response, the lack of affordable units, and its place on the waterfront, the development was ultimately approved with a vote of 10-3.
