Kingston-area mine helps launch one of the world’s largest atmospheric carbon removal projects

Canadian Wollastonite, a mineral mine located just outside of Kingston, has announced a three-year agreement with UK-based carbon removal company UNDO Carbon to supply 450,000 tonnes of wollastonite for what will be the second-largest geo-engineered carbon removal initiative in the world.

The project employs a process called “enhanced rock weathering”, which involves spreading wollastonite on farm land to permanently capture atmospheric carbon, with the added benefit of improving soil health for local farmers.

Canadian Wollastonite President Bob Vasily says the program is designed to be a “win-win”. Farmers receive wollastonite at no cost, with hauling fees for Kingston farmers subsidized through the city’s first-of-its-kind municipal rebate. So far, 162 farms have participated, and this new deal will expand access to more than 2,000 farms across Eastern Ontario.

With the initiative garnering international attention, Vasily says Kingston is helping pioneer a scalable, global climate solution.
