Council has voted to maintain its current corporate greenhouse gas reduction target of 30% by 2030, after considering but ultimately rejecting a proposed increase to 40-50%.
The decision followed a delay in winter 2024 that allowed staff to review the feasibility of steeper reductions. Consultant Nathan Manion of Greenscale noted that even 30% is “the most optimistic target,” given the short five-year window left and the time required for infrastructure change.
Council voted 12-1 to keep the 30% target, with Councillor Jeff McLaren being the sole vote opposed.
