On Sunday August 23, Dan Levy had a chat with University Alberta Professor Tracy Bear. In the Instagram Livestream, Bear taught Dan and his fans how to perform a smudging ceremony. She also discusses indigenous storytelling and discusses content from her Indigenous Canada course. There were 5,000 viewers on the Livestream. Dr. Bear plans to have another discussion with Dan Levy next week on Instagram Live.
Levy initially introduced the initiative on August 17th in a tweet. “Come learn with me? I’ve signed up for a (free) course through the University of Alberta called Indigenous Canada. 12 lessons that explore Indigenous histories and contemporary issues from an Indigenous perspective” Levy said.
While the course has been running since 2017, Levy’s involvement caused a huge surge in enrolment. In one week, 51,000 additional people enrolled in the course, making the course enrolment 143,000. The popular Schitt’s Creek star and creator felt like that it was important to learn about Indigenous Canada, which he felt he had never learned in school.
