Smoke’s Poutinerie is reopening their doors after closing down just before the pandemic—under new ownership, with the same management, and a revamped menu.

Phillip Helpard, the store manager, and his staff are tentatively preparing to reopen this Friday, Sept. 18. In an interview with YGK News, Helpard assured that though the store will be under new ownership, the quality of food and friendly culture will remain of the same quality.

“The new owner is a local Kingstonian,” Helpard said. “He’s spent his whole life here, graduated [from] Queen’s, and raised a family here. When the opportunity to take over Smoke’s came across his desk, he decided it was worth giving a go. Smoke’s has been here for 10 years and has been highly successful during that time. Like I said before, everyone is excited to get it going, that includes him as well.”

Kingston residents understand how integral a good poutine is to a night out. Most of Smoke’s previous staff are returning and are working hard towards a successful reopening amidst these uncertain times.

“What I can tell you is we have a great team and were working hard to get it done,” Helpard said. “The store is in the process of being cleaned from top to bottom, but we’re hoping to be open as of this Friday if everything works out perfectly.”

In the midst of the pandemic, Smoke’s hopes to do their part.

“COVID has gripped everything around us, and we need to stay vigilant to make sure we’re doing out part in keeping both our customers and team safe.”

As a result, Smoke’s will not be offering in-house seating as the restaurant is often bustling and would make social distancing difficult. “[It] wouldn’t be safe for anyone,” Helpard said.

Instead, Smoke’s is offering takeout and delivery.

“You will still be able to walk in and place your order, you just won’t be able to sit down and eat,” Helpard added.

Boneless wings, cauliflower bites, and pizza poutine on the menu

Given the new climate, management felt it was necessary to update the Smoke’s menu.

“We wanted to take a moment also to share some exciting news with you! On September first Smoke’s actually had a huge menu overhaul. When we reopen not only will we have a fresh clean store, but a fresh menu as well! The new menu is packed with some amazing new options!”

“Boneless wings, Cauliflower bites, Pizza Poutine! That’s just listing a few! We have soooo much more on the way.”

Helpard hopes that this will ensure a better dining experience for those with dietary restrictions and expressed excitement for Friday’s reopening.
