Lionhearts Applauds Approval of Community Food Redistribution Warehouse

At Kingston City Council’s May 18 meeting, council voted overwhelmingly in favour of supporting a Community Food Redistribution Warehouse, falling under the United Way of KFL&A’s purview with Lionhearts Inc. managing the day-to-day operations.

“On behalf of those who have no voice, we thank Kingston city council for their support for this important community resource,” said Travis Blackmore, executive director of Lionhearts Inc. “With a rising number of Canadian households experiencing food insecurity, and the increased strain COVID-19 has placed on both individuals and not-for-profits, this centre will help Kingston’s food programs lay strong roots for future growth and continued success.”

With the funding now in place, the warehouse could open this fall.

Once open, it would house a number of different food initiatives, including Lionhearts Inc.’s program which gathers surplus food from local retailers, restaurants, and wholesalers for redistribution to those in need.
