Ontario Provincial Police have been monitoring a rolling blockade along the 401 westbound, which started this morning from Akwesasne/Cornwall area and has slowed traffic along the way to Tyendinaga.
Most recently OPP East Region, which has been updating of the slowdown, said vehicles had pulled off of Highway 401 and it was clear but the slowdown was continuing on to Highway 49 – Marysville Road.
The slowdown from Akwenase at 7 am, and passed the Kingston area around 11 on Wednesday morning.
The rolling blockade, one of at least three today, caused delays to unsuspecting commuters, but no other consequences have been reported in association with the slowdown.
Several vehicles blocked off traffic in both lanes of the westbound highway, in yet another show of solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en people and demonstration of protest against RCMP action at the Gidimt’en checkpoint.
The rolling blockade was one of several planned throughout Ontario today.
On Monday, a Facebook group called Credible Mohawk Entertainment which says it provides “informational and educational programming and support to help people decolonize and liberate their minds and lives”, shared details of three planned slowdowns, with adjacent blockades taking place from Six Nations to Tyendinaga and Hamilton to Brantford.
A comment on the post also suggested there would be one starting in Kahnawake in Quebec as well.
Participants in the rolling blockade were to display flags on their cars, put their hazard lights on and travel between 40 and 45 km/h in a group.
The post also noted that if any emergency vehicles came along vehicles were to move to the side in single file until it passed.
The rolling blockades join a number of demonstrations throughout the country in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en people and their fight to protect land against pipeline expansion.
Last week the RCMP moved on the territory and made a number of arrests, including two journalists documenting the standoff.
Kingston saw its own demonstration on Sunday, with protestors blocking access to the LaSalle Causeway for nearly an hour before dispersing with no arrests made.
A rally point for protestors and supporters heading to Tyendinaga was expected to be the Pow Wow park in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
