Return of Aberdeen St. party: Queen’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations result in over $45K in fines

Kingston’s recent St. Patrick’s Day celebrations saw over 4,000 students partying in the university district, marking a notable return after a quieter Homecoming weekend in the fall.

The infamous street party on Aberdeen St. returned and festivities led to numerous nuisance party declarations throughout the university district on Saturday, March 15. Kingston Bylaw imposed over $34,000 in fines, alongside over $14,000 in tickets from Kingston Police.

Steve Mothersell with Licensing and Enforcement commented on the event, stating, “Each year we’ve gotten better… I know that the fines, you know, total just over $34,000 seems rather high, but realistically, it could be higher if we were going to a heavy-handed enforcement.”

Despite the fines, Mothersell noted that overall the approach of education and safety has made the event a more manageable and positive experience.
