Council approves additional $600,000 to attract family doctors

At their meeting on Tuesday, council unanimously approved an additional $600,000 for the city’s family physician recruitment efforts.

The initiative started in 2022, and has since connected approximately 8,100 residents who previously lacked primary care and has prevented 14,500 patients from losing access to care when their doctors retired. The city has already invested $3 million in these concentrated efforts to attract physicians.

Current data suggests fewer than 9,000 residents remain without a primary care provider, and the local Ontario Health Team is optimistic they can roster all unattached patients by the end of 2025.

Councillor Don Amos highlighted the promising news for Kingston’s healthcare, stating, “This is fantastic news for Kingston residents. We’re definitely heading in the right direction and this only bodes well for us as a healthy community.”
