Kingston Health Sciences Centre shares milestone in robotic surgery program

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) has reached a major milestone in surgical innovation by successfully performing two complex robotic procedures—gallbladder and colorectal surgery—during one operating session.

This approach marks a first for the region, changing what is possible in a single hospital stay. Robotic surgery offers patients procedures with smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times. Being able to undertake multiple surgeries in one session also means fewer hospital visits, and reduced anesthesia exposure.

In a release covering the latest advancement, KHSC also noted that they have plans of obtaining a second robotic surgery platform to expand the program in the near future.

“Although Kingston’s a small city in the grand scheme of things, I think we’ve had a fairly influential role in rolling out robotic surgery across the country and really advocating for robotic surgery as a standard of care,” Robotic surgery lead Dr. Sunil Patel stated in an interview with CFRC.
