Frontenac Park closed to public for expansion of day services at Adelaide Street Shelter

As of today, Frontenac Park will be temporarily closed to the public for the expansion of day services at the Adelaide Street Shelter.

The Adelaide Street Shelter, located at 38 Cowdy St., is an emergency shelter operated by Lionhearts Inc. offering overnight shelter services and day services. The shelter is currently in the process of winding down, with closure expected in early 2026.

Until the site closes down, the city has chosen to lease the neighbouring park to Lionhearts Inc. for expanded programming during the day, such as gardening, educational programs and outdoor health and wellness activities.

“It’s an opportunity to really just help move people forward and help them reach their goals…” explained Jayne Hartley, the city’s Director of Housing and Social Services.

According to a release from the city, the idea was raised by community members in an Adelaide Near Neighbour Workshop held in June, and requested by shelter users and operators.
