Council has opted not to participate in Ontario’s new “bring-your-own” alcohol permit option for outdoor public events.
At their latest meeting, councillors considered a staff recommendation to further explore the permit framework, which would allow alcohol to be brought to events like festivals and markets after April 30 for municipalities that choose to opt in.
According to the release from the Province, the initiative aims to reduce costs for event organizers and attendees. However, Kingston councillors raised concerns about enforcement, liability, and added pressure on already stretched municipal resources.
After a heated discussion, Council voted unanimously against further investigation, meaning Kingston will not participate in the program at this time.
