Kingston Health Sciences becomes first hospital in Canada to acquire AI tool to diagnose coronary artery disease

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) has become the first hospital in Canada to implement HeartFlow, an AI-powered tool that’s transforming the way coronary artery disease (CAD) is diagnosed.

CAD, the most common form of cardiovascular disease, occurs when arteries supplying blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked. Until now, determining the severity of these blockages often required invasive procedures like cardiac catheterization.

HeartFlow creates a 3D digital model of the heart’s arteries using only a patient’s coronary CT scan, identifying blockages and their impact. This model helps physicians assess whether a blockage is restricting blood flow and determine the best treatment path.

KHSC teams will study the technology’s impact on Canadian patients and plan to publish their findings, with the goal of encouraging adoption in hospitals across the country.
