Council urges senior levels of government to take steps toward establishing a National Marine Conservation Area in Lake Ontario

Council passed a motion at their last meeting requesting the federal and provincial governments take steps towards establishing a National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) in Lake Ontario.

A NMCA is a federal designation managed by Parks Canada aimed at protecting ecologically significant freshwater and marine ecosystems, balancing sustainability and community use. There are currently five NMCAs in Canada.

While no formal process has been launched, Nature Canada says there has been growing interest from government officials in an area stretching roughly from Brighton to Kingston.

The motion passed by Council asks senior levels of government to start the process by undertaking a feasibility study.
