A virtual Convocation will be held at Queen’s University this week to celebrate its new graduates. This marks the first time ever that Queen’s will host its Convocations ceremony online. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, Queen’s plans to maintain its traditional event structure. The event will take place between November 10th and 13th.
“These are extraordinary times, and the limits on how many people can gather together remain in place, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of convocation for our graduates and their family, friends, and supports,” Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane said in a statement. “This is a time to celebrate each graduate’s achievement, and to mark this special occasion as we always have – as a community.”
The ceremony will still be hosted at Grant Hall with university officials in attendance. The podium will include university Rector Sam Hiemstra, Chancellor Jim Leech and Principal Deane, a faculty representative and representative from the Queen’s University Alumni Association.
Bruce Mitchell (Sc’68) is expected to be one of the Honorary Degree recipients this year. Mitchell is a noted businessman, founder and CEO of Permian Industries, a management and holding company. He is a major donor of Mitchell Hall, which primarily serves as the Student Wellness Centre, an exam centre, an expansion of the ARC and a research and development centre. Mitchell will be speaking at the event.
CBC Commentator and podcast host Elamin Abdelmahmoud (ArtSci’11) will also be hosting the Virtual Convocation ceremony through the Faculty of Arts ans Sciences on November 18th. Those interested in the event can sign up here.
More information about the convocation can be found on the University Registrar website.
