A fundraiser has raised over $100,000 for the Screening Room, a local movie theatre that was hit hard by the effects of the pandemic. The campaign included several ways to donate to the movie theatre.
“A huge thank you to all our Friends of the Screening Room who have sponsored seats, bought gold cards, donated money, and purchased totes & gift passes over the last few months!” the Screening Room wrote.
Since the pandemic began, the Screening Room faced several challenges. This included a 75% decline in moviegoing, fewer movie releases and is facing significant costs following the four month shutdown last spring.
The Screening Room sought to sponsor their seats, allowing an inscription of the sponsors name to be made visible using a plaque made from Kingston’s Trophy House. Now, all of the theatre’s 210 seats have been sponsored. The theatre also sold out of their “gold membership” cards.
As a result of the community support, Wendy Huot, the owner of Screening Room, says that “it will go a long way” in covering the theatres past and future losses in 2020 and 2021.
The Screening Room is still accepting donations on its website.
