The Great Lakes Museum has announced that the S.S. Keewatin has been selected as the 2025 Museum Ship of the Year by the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA).
Since the ship was acquired by the Museum in 2023, staff and volunteers have been hard at work so visitors can have the Edwardian-era passenger experience.
“The ship will be a labour of love for many, many years ahead,” said Great Lakes Museum Executive Director Bep Schippers. “When she arrived in October 2023 … up until the weekend we opened for tours, people were working every single day for probably 10, 12 hours a day.”
After countless hours spent repainting, cleaning the engine room, and cataloguing artifacts, the ship opened to the public in May 2024.
The Keewatin was nominated for this award by SSHSA members and chosen by the organization’s Awards Committee.
