Kingston ties run deep in debut novel nominated for Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence

Part-time Kingston local and Queen’s Law graduate Marianne Miller’s debut novel We Were the Bullfighters has been nominated in the 2025 Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence for Best First Crime Novel.

The historical fiction explores the real-life stories of Ernest Hemingway at the Toronto Daily Star and Norman ‘Red’ Ryan, the notorious bank robber who made a daring escape from Kingston Penitentiary in 1923.

Listen to hear Miller share how her journey intertwines with Kingston, from visiting the sites where the story unfolded, meeting her publisher at Kingston WritersFest, and being invited to read from her novel at the Queen’s Homecoming 2025 Law ’80 reunion.

“…I do feel very connected to Kingston,” says Miller. “…I always think that it’s a great honour to read something and you’re very near the place where it happened.”

Winners of the Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence will be announced on May 30, 2025.
